BAMM’s progression to a Faculty of the Academy of Medical
Royal Colleges
Dear All,
I wanted to let all BAMM members know that – after many
years of campaigning, persuading and sheer hard graft, we are finally in
discussion with the DH and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges to set up a
Faculty of Medical Management. A business case has been prepared and
submitted to the DH and sent by email and post to all BAMM Members.
The aim of setting up the Faculty is to provide a vehicle by
which doctors in management positions may be assessed and accredited, to
provide the basis for their revalidation as medical managers. It is essential
that the decision-making of Responsible Officers and all those working in the
infra-structure of revalidation, including appraisal, is underpinned by a
single set of standards and that training and assessment of medical managers is
undertaken with consistency and rigour.
As you will be aware, BAMM’s Standards of Medical Management
and Leadership, which form the basis of Fit to Lead, were developed in 2004 and
have been refined each year since then. They have been used extensively, not
only to develop training plans for some 1300 doctors and other clinicians, but
also in selection processes for medical and clinical director posts. BAMM’s
Standards for Medical Management and Leadership have formed the basis for the
RO Competency Framework and for the competency framework for appraisers and
appraisal trainers.
Whilst it is still early days, I thought it would interest –
and I hope encourage- you to know
that, at last, we seem to be somewhat nearer our goal of embedding medical
management and leadership firmly in the education systems and culture, across
the entire profession, from undergraduate years to the most senior of medical
management roles. We even seem to have achieved an impact on the accreditation
of non-medical managers.
I will keep you updated as to our progress – please do not
hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or comments.
